Vetiver The Errant Appeal (Bella Union) Laid-again, gentle-target,

Vetiver

The Errant Attraction

(Bella Union)

Laid-back, comfortable-emphasis, stunning, relaxed, simple: Vetiver are all these details. But they are not, it is a shame to say, pretty appealing. Led by bandleader Andy Cabic, they are now onto their fifth album, which is apparently a whole lot more "experimental" than previously - implying that their earlier deliver the results sounded like Bread or Chicago, considering This Errant Allure, not unpleasant by any usually means, is neither hard nor complicated listening. Rather, drifting, luscious tracks these as It really is Further than Me and Are not able to You Tell glide by in a cloud, a very little like Beck's wonderful Seachange album, minus the wracking angst and, crucially, melody. There are just not plenty of tunes amid the drum machines and blurred guitars. The album gathers a bit of speed halfway because of (Trip, Trip, Trip), but primarily this is a soundtrack for a Californian coastal idyll, the place time passes slowly and gradually and everything is coated in an amber haze. Once a multitude of listens, some sonic subtleties emerge, but sadly a single track seems a good deal like the upcoming. It may possibly make a good summer season report, if Scotland has one.
